This is a particle system I made for the game Jetpack Penguin in the fall of 2019. It’s a jet of snow that shoots out of the main character’s jetpack so he can fly. The particle system shoots snow particles in a narrow cone with a random rotation and starting lifetime to give it more variation and to make it feel more natural. In addition, the particles get smaller with time to avoid adding visual noise to the screen and to keep the emphasis on our main character.
The snow jet particles also have collision, so they interact with the environment by dispersing when they hit the ground.
Below, you’ll find an example of what this looks like in the latest prototype build, although the particle system was shrunk so particles rarely collide with the environment in practice.
